Another bit of productivity!

A few days late, but I got my newsletter out, with a picture of the third book in the Boston Technowitch series (which I am currently outlining). I even managed to write an installment of the serial for the newsletter and compiled a PDF of the serial to date.

Words written today: 1,593
Words written this month: 13,433
Words written 2017: 143,832
Average words/day 2017: 692
Books completed 2017: 2 (plus 1 novella)
Pages read today: 0
Books read 2017: ?
Days until school starts: 32

So my current “round number” goal is to hit 150,000 before the end of the month. If I write as many words as I did today each for the rest of the month, I can do it. (Did my saying this jinx it? We shall see.)

Gone to the dogs

That was the first half of the day — the children’s section of the local library does a monthly session of reading to dogs as part of the summer program. I think it’s geared toward younger children, encouraging them to read aloud and improve fluency with an audience that won’t criticize them. However, our daughter loves dogs, so she eagerly signed up to read today.

She read the opening of Ursula Vernon’s Giant Trouble to a lovely black poodle. The poodle’s companion said that her reading was excellent — and also a mile a minute. No surprise there.

I meant to work on the outline for the next book today, but instead, I worked on creating a print version of the novella. I don’t have plans to put it into any sales channels, but I can see a few uses for having copies myself.

No new words today, alas!

It’s drafty in here

Indeed! I have a completed draft of Siren Circle, and it’s off to first readers now! The Mob of Impatience only has to wait a little while longer.

Tomorrow, I start fleshing out the outline for the third book some more.

Rain to sun to rain

It was pouring when I woke up. By the time I got up, it was mostly sunny with fluffy clouds. By dinner, dark and pouring rain with lots of thunder and lightning. Weather can’t make up its mind.

I split my time today between writing and working on birthday cake for my son. We had an interesting exchange about frosting (I asked him about cream cheese or buttercream, and he said, “Frosting for the cake?” I said yes, I wasn’t planning to put frosting on the fried rice), but now the cake is done and waiting for candles to be lit.

The writing went really well today. The climax and denouement and all clicked, and I got a good chunk of words. Still need to go back and edit and beef up some earlier stuff, but I’m on a roll.

I stared at those numbers and said, “Hey, if I just write 209 more words this evening, I’ll have 10,000 for the month!” Which is true. However, cake is calling. And ice cream, too.

Words can wait until tomorrow (which is also when I will send my newsletter that should’ve gone out today).

Into the week

I really need to come up with better post titles. Maybe phrases from my writing, or random quotes? My titles are all pedestrian and too on-the-nose. What do you think?

The only difference between today and any other Sunday was our daughter’s friend was here for the morning, too. Other than that, it was still groceries and laundry and cooking for me, with words tucked in at the end. Tomorrow, I will get words — around baking our son’s birthday cake, as well as a couple other items on the to-do list. But I want to try to get back to the 1,000–2,000 words/day range, and over 2,000 would be better (likely not tomorrow, but perhaps next month). I still have goals to meet, after all.

Today’s words: 123

Family, friends, and fun

I spent a good chunk of the day helping our daughter clean her room so she could host her friend for a sleepover tonight. Then our friends came over, and we gamed — D&D (3.5). I’m DM-ing a run through Castle Ravenloft. I’m not the best DM, but everyone seems to be having fun, which is my metric for success.

Eventually, after our friends left and the girls settled down to sleep, I wrote all of 35 words (3 new sentences). Also corrected one typo (changed “hiving” to “having”). Not much, but I still count the day good.

Hot Friday

Yes, it’s clearly summer. Temperatures in the 90s (fortunately, the low 90s here), humidity hovering around 50% (when we’re lucky). I think I speak for us all when I say yuck!

Not as many words as yesterday, but still making progress.

I got an e-mail today noting that someone had a problem with the Kindle file for Ghost Garages — there was a glitch where a page was missing in the middle. I know the file is complete, but if others have this problem, please contact me. I will be happy to provide the missing text. (I also would like to compile the information to pass to Amazon, to see if the issue can be addressed.)

Our son said I didn’t have to sound so gleeful about the end of summer. I explained that although I love them dearly and like spending time with them, going to the library and such, I just don’t get as much done. (On the other hand, I’m getting more sleep because I go back to bed after my husband leaves in the morning, as I don’t have to get children out the door and off to school. Sleep is good.)

Disaster of not-quite-epic proportions

When I got up this morning, the hot water pot (electric kettle, or whatever you want to call it) wouldn’t heat. I checked that the GFCI hadn’t tripped. I checked that other things in the same power strip were functioning. I took the pot off the stand and reseated it several times (which worked last time it went flaky). Nothing helped.

I had to resort to heating water for tea in the microwave this morning. Shocking, I know. I replaced the water pot this afternoon. I was good, though — I didn’t buy the really fancy one with all the different temperature settings!

Detail of that rabbit sculpture

Artist is Beth Cavener. Title: L’Amante.

Her gallery of shots is much better than mine, but here’s a closer view I took.

Lots of driving. Couple stops.

Also lots of reading novellas.

No writing.

Time for time off!

Some really fun things today. Our daughter decided she wanted purple streaks in her hair, so I helped her do that — bleaching, rinsing, dyeing, washing and conditioning … we’ll see how it looks in the sun tomorrow. Didn’t get to it until late.

Also maybe not fun but related to fun, I sent my twinkling stars skirt back to ThinkGeek for exchange because one of the light strings doesn’t work. I love the skirt, so I’m really looking forward to having one that works completely.

And I wrote 675 words tonight.

Coming up: time visiting family. Still will be posting word counts.

Picture my daughter colored on an app. She likes lots of bright colors. I love her creative use of the colors.

Time, consumed

A good chunk of my time today was spent hanging out to get my car serviced. I went in for an oil change and to get new brake pads. Decided to go ahead and get the state inspection while I was at it. (I did not know I could do that two months early!)

Unfortunately, they found more wrong, so I hung out. At least I had good reading material on my iPad, an unpublished novella that I fully expect to see on awards ballots in the future.

With one thing and another, I didn’t sit down to get words until well after 9, and I only wound up with 271 today. Still, it counts. Onward!

School’s out

Such a busy day. End of school always is, as I take the kids for ice cream and to the comics and gaming store, as well as to the library. Lots of spending time with the kids, recommending things they might enjoy, and realizing just how much they’ve grown over the last year.

Late writing tonight. 547 words though, which is a step in the right direction.

Tired brain is slow brain

So … finished the copyedit in the wee hours. Author has confirmed that she can open the files with no problem, and we’ve reconfirmed the timeline.

Other than that, I’ve poked at e-mail and browser tabs, picked up my son after his last final, and cooked dinner. It didn’t even occur to me until late this evening that I could have caught up on American Gods today. *sigh*

Did manage 214 words.

Tomorrow will be hectic, but I might be more alert, so that’ll be fine.

Done-done-done-done

Finished the freelance deadline. Wrote absolutely no fiction on Monday.

Going to sleep tomorrow. We’ll see what sort of productivity Tuesday brings.
