In our yard. Which is not fantastic, but not exactly surprising, either. And gives an indication of just how much rain we’ve been getting.

Anyway, not a lot on the new word front today, and what there was, I didn’t count, as I was working through edits on Siren Circle and hence, both adding and deleting as I went. I may add some words later on book 3, Troll Tunnels.

Meanwhile, enjoy these pictures.large mushroom

(On the calendar, at least.)

In actual fact, it wasn’t a bad day. I got some normal adulting tasks done, knocked a couple freelance tasks off my to-do list, poked at the writing (yeah, not a lot there — only 59 words), and cooked dinner. But I’m going to try to get to bed before 11 and hope sleep will make tomorrow more productive.

The month’s good start is rapidly falling away. Have to see if I can get back on track next week.

… and one more, and one more, and …

Is it just me? I keep taking on little things at random intervals, and that works great for a week or two, but then these other little things land, and suddenly I’m needing more sleep so I’m clear-headed enough for everything, but I’m not sure how to get more in my schedule. Yeah, maybe that’s just me. And it’s a recent thing, too — used to be I’d skip sleep to try to get everything done, forgetting about diminishing returns.

Anyway, only 152 words today, but also some thoughts for further down the series, so that’s good.

Random things from today:

Saw the new building that my husband’s department got moved to.

Made a simple strawberry ice cream with the girl. (Whip 2 cups heavy cream with 1 can sweetened condensed milk. Fold in 2 cups mashed strawberries and some pink food coloring. Stick it in the freezer.)

Made the okonomiyaki again. Pickled ginger is a good addition. As is bacon.

But oh, so tiring! I spent four hours Saturday weeding, and time on Sunday cleaning, laundering, and baking. I also decided the outline for the third Boston Technowitch is complete enough and got a good start on the first chapter.

By the way — four hours of weeding? Bad idea if the usual exercise your fingers get is typing.

Our son said I didn’t have to sound so gleeful about the end of summer. I explained that although I love them dearly and like spending time with them, going to the library and such, I just don’t get as much done. (On the other hand, I’m getting more sleep because I go back to bed after my husband leaves in the morning, as I don’t have to get children out the door and off to school. Sleep is good.)

Artist is Beth Cavener. Title: L’Amante.

Her gallery of shots is much better than mine, but here’s a closer view I took.

Our itinerary:
Pennsylvania to Madison, Wisconsin, overnight stop in Elkhart, Indiana
In Madison for a few days with my mom and younger brother and his fiancée
Madison to Fort Collins, Colorado, overnight stop in Nebraska
In and around Fort Collins for a few days with my in-laws
Fort Collins to Pennsylvania, overnight stops in Lawrence, Kansas, and Lexington, Kentucky

It’s a lot to pack into two weeks, and it was wonderful. (Click through to see pictures up to our arrival in Fort Collins. There are a lot, but even this is just a subset of what I took.)Read the rest of this entry  )

score cards from laser tag

In addition to lots of copyediting, I played laser tag today. Our friends had a birthday party for their son, and they wanted it to be for families. Rather amusing — our son, our daughter, and I wound up on the blue team, and my husband was on the red. Our daughter was quite indignant about the fact that her dad shot her.

On the blue team, our son was the high scorer two out of the three games. On the red team, my husband was. Me? Well, I scored better than our daughter and her best friend.

But it was a lot of fun. We all enjoyed it, which was the point.

Oh, and I managed to squeeze out 481 words at some point here. We’ll say they were Sunday words.

Now to go grab a few hours sleep before getting kids off to school and starting the last round on this manuscript!

Well, maybe. Mostly, what I’ve got is deadlines that I’m determined to meet.

Also 542 words today.

Debating between copyediting another chapter and getting some sleep to have fresh eyes and brain in the morning. Truthfully, pretty sure I’m going to have to give up sleep either tonight or tomorrow to get this done. But (as I said) I am determined.

One of the neighbors always has pumpkins out that they decorate seasonally. Or just leave out all winter for the squirrels. This one’s ready for summer.

Beautiful weather the past couple days — mid to high 70s, with enough wind to keep it bearable. I even went for a walk yesterday.

Today was mostly focused on freelance work, and I’ll be doing that through the weekend to finish up for my deadline.

Did get 128 words and started poking at the plot for book 3.

This red Japanese maple is down at the end of the block, on my way to the girl’s bus stop.

Happy June!

Can you believe five months of the year are gone already? They are just flying by!

I have a freelance deadline, so I’m putting the work first. That means the words stay on the low side because I’m doing them at the end of the day when my body’s telling me I should have been asleep two hours ago. However, I wanted to start this month with more words than I’d averaged last month (which involved staying up later). Hooray, a thousand words!

weed in bloom

This picture is a weed that’s growing at my daughter’s bus stop. It’s almost as tall as I am, but after next week, I won’t see it again (at least not up close) for a few months (and hopefully, it’ll get cut down before then).

We had no real plans for the day — Memorial Day doesn’t always go well — but our friends e-mailed to say they had a new game, and did we want to come play? Of course we did!

The game is called Bang!, and it’s a spaghetti Western card game. We played twice, and I was an outlaw both times. In the second game, I was the last person the sheriff took out. Lots of fun.

Other than that, I made a pass at cover copy for Siren Circle, and I wrote 166 words.

Also took a picture of the current physical TBR pile, many of which I got at the Nebula Conference. (Not pictured is Todd Lockwood’s Summer Dragon, which the boy is reading.)

I slept in this morning, then spent the day between writing, reading a novella, and watching my husband game.

A good day, and one I might mostly repeat tomorrow, except with some time for the kids as well.

Today’s word count: 2,032

It rained yesterday. It rained last night — I woke up a couple of times and heard it on the roof. By the time I got, just after 6, however, sun was pouring through the living room windows, and it promised to be a balmy day. And what I saw of it was nice.

Wrote 2,030 words today. Happy about that. Tomorrow, I’ll get back to the stat block. Tonight, I’m too tired.

Was supposed to finalize back-cover copy for Siren Circle today but did not. Rather unhappy with myself about that.

Anyway, off to bed now.

When I start something that’s new to me, I have choices about how to proceed: I can read up on how things are done, I can ask questions, or I can bluff and act like I’m positive I know what I’m doing. (Or some combination of these)Read the rest of this entry  )

In the last day or so, I’ve mentioned to both my kids that I have too many things to do and not enough time to do them in. My daughter’s advice was that I need a schedule. I laughed at this, because it doesn’t solve the underlying problem.

My son told me I need to prioritize and not try to do everything at once. He also suggested a Time-Turner. I told him I’d be fine if, say, I could do a week’s worth of work in a day. (This led to a lovely digression on day lengths on other planets.Pluto’s day length is closest to a week, for those who are wondering.)

What they don’t teach you in school is that prioritize doesn’t just mean decide what order you’re going to do things in; it also means decide what you’re not going to do. Some types of housework are an easy cut, as is clearing off my desk. Another very helpful thing is that at the Nebula Conference this last weekend, some things I thought I would be responsible for were taken off my plate. But my pared-down list is still busy: novella reading I’ve committed to with other writers (they’re reading mine, too), an academic press copyediting deadline, and a novel I’m trying to finish. (This is all on top of family and SFWA stuff.)

So up next (before I go to bed) is roughing out a plan for the next couple of weeks. We’ll see how it goes.

Words today: 325 words

Maybe tomorrow I’ll talk about the other major thing on my mind, the line between vulnerability and helplessness.

Working on getting back into the groove still. Didn’t help that some had three-hour delay yesterday and today — throws off my internal clock in the morning. On the other hand, I did get to sleep in a little, so I can’t complain about that.

Today was paying work and reading a novella and getting some more words (276). Still a number of things on my “to catch up” list, but I’m getting there!

An absolutely fantastic day! We started with the SFWA business meeting, wherein the results of the election were announced. I was not unanimously acclaimed for Director-at-Large, though there were 292 (I think) aye votes. There were also nays and write-ins. Of course, I’m now Vice President, but the overwhelming positive vote was nice. When it was my turn to speak, I thanked those who voted for me as Direvtor, then paused and said, “Surprise!”

The highlight of my day, though, had to be sitting down to talk to Jane Yolen about her time as SFWA President!

The Nebula banquet and Awards were fun, too.

Each table had a lovely robot centerpiece created by Don Jones.Art robot centerpiece

Sadly, most of my photos of the actual ceremony are blurry and not worth sharing.

There were a number of alternate universe acceptance speeches after the awards by nominees who did not win.alternate universe. ebula Award winners

And I got my picture taken with Jane Yolen, who said, “You make me feel tall!”Erin with Jane Yolen

And after I got up to my room, I wrote 115 words and this post, and now I am going to sleep!
