It all varies for me, based on the goal and the timing and my own emotional state. NaNoWriMo is one time when the goal works best - but even then, it is susceptible to getting derailed by a bad emotional turn.

The one thing that always holds true for me, is to stick to whatever's working at the time. Which is the same as no answer at all (but feels better).
