For this story, the last comments I got from an editor really made a difference. Others had told me they had trouble with the motivation -- the last editor was the only one who specified that that was on a personal level because the characters read like series characters, where parts of their history was explored elsewhere. Once I knew what was missing, fixing it was much easier.
