Inktober 31 — improbable friends

Last day of Inktober. I hope you all have enjoyed it.

Today, I actually used the Inktober prompt, friends. And this post does double duty as my weekly gratitude post. I’m grateful to Mr. Jake Parker for creating Inktober, to all the many artists I’ve seen participating over the years, and to all the people who’ve encouraged me and commented this month. Thank you all!

Inktober 30 — already?

Inspiration is thin on the ground. Or at least, energy and willingness to do anything deep and detailed.

Inktober 29 — it’s late

Okay, not so late for some people, but for our group with kids, gaming until 11 at night is late. Hence the late posting and the rather skimpy sketch (the poor shot of which I’ll replace later with a better photo of it).

Inktober 28 — Gates of Barovia

I was spending the evening prepping to start the Expedition to Castle Ravenloft with our gaming group tomorrow. This bit of description comes early, and I thought I’d sketch it to share with the group. (I had to draw something, and I certainly wasn’t going to share the encounter maps I set up!)

Inktober 27 — bunnies

I wanted something fairly easy today. I’ve got all kinds of proportions wrong, but they’re not horrible.

Inktober 26 — more tails (spiked)

Relevant notes jotted on the page. Guess it’s going to come down to do I think dragons have dinosaur-style tails.

Inktober 25 — tails

More anatomy studies. Not sure where I’m going with the tail yet.

Inktober 24 — wings and things

Working on anatomy, considering specializations. Of course, if a dragon has a beast’s hindfeet, one might argue that it should have a beast’s forefeet as well, making a bat the best model. Ditto bird talons and bird wings. On the other hand, the dragon head drew on multiple influences, so having the wings do so as well seems reasonable to me.

Inktober 23 — soccer game

Sketch based on my daughter’s game today. Ugh, the heads! Other than that, though, I’m fairly pleased with it.

Inktober 22 — dragon wing (attempt one)

Okay, so the head actually came out better than I’d expected, so I moved on to the wings. I’m not nearly as happy with this (as you can tell by the annotations), but I know what to work on.

Inktober 21 — dragon head

There’s a little bit of fish, a little bit of bird, a little bit of lizard …

I don’t know her name. (My daughter is certain the dragon’s a she.) The scar over her eye happened in an honor fight. I’ll probably eventually write her story — after I figure out some of the details.

I’d also really like to try another drawing of her with ink and brush, trying for smoother lines and perhaps not so much persnickety detail. Not right away, though.

Inktober 20 — fantasy landscape

After yesterday’s mountain, I was going to do something simple. Yeah, right. Evidently didn’t get the mountains out of my system. (Never will, really.)

Yes, I know the dragon is terrible. Need more practice.

Inktober 19 — Home means . . .

Not once did I help paint the N. It feels like something I should’ve done, at least once.

For those who don’t know, the post title is from the song “Home means Nevada.” Of course, home is where my family is, and for the last dozen years, that’s been Pennsylvania — but this place will always hold part of my heart.

Inktober 18 — Habitica avatar

There’s a site I belong to called Habitica. It used to be HabitRPG, and it’s all about gamifying productivity.  Each person takes on a role commonly found in RPGs (healer, mage, warrior, rogue), and can participate in both an adventuring party and a guild. Helpful, and lots if fun costumes and pets.

So today, I sketched my avatar in her current outfit.

Inktober 17 — ink!

Ever get the feeling I’m stretching for ideas? The perspective is really off on the gum Arabic, and I think the lid on the small ink bottle looks smooshed. Could be worse, though!

Inktober 16 — leaves

More seasonal and simple — I didn’t even shade the leaves!

Inktober 13 — abandoned architecture

Found the original on Pinterest. I skimped on the details a bit.

Inktober 12 — bird in flight

Bird silhouette, outlined with Uniball and filled in with Sharpie. Background shading is Uniball as well.
