Migraine yesterday; no drawing. Still headachey today, but well enough for a simple sketch. Didn’t use a reference, so the perspective is most likely off.

This one is based on a picture I took of my daughter years ago at a nearby park. She was holding a ladybug in her hands, and we were waiting for my husband and son who were biking from the other end of this path.

When this picture was just the black outlines, it looked rather foreboding.

Then I added color, to bring it back to the summer day when the picture was captured. Media: printer paper, Uniball Signo pen, a few Sharpie markers, and a few Staedtler Triplus pens.

This took quite a bit of time, which is, of course, why I stick with simpler pics on weekdays.

I spent most of the day sitting outside for a yard sale that didn’t get much sold. (On the other hand, we earned something.) You might think this would have been the ideal time for me to sketch, but in the swarms of gnats, that just wasn’t feasible. So after that and making dinner and getting my daughter to bed, I just wanted to do something simple (cue suggestions from son of crazy lady in a lightning storm and from husband of puppy stuck in a tree) — not faces or hands.

Thus, jellyfish.

After yesterday, I decided to focus on the hard things — heads, hands, proportions. Sketched my husband’s hands while he was playing on the Xbox. The right thumb is too long and the fingers on both hands too thin, but overall, it’s not bad, I think.

I look at this and all I see are the errors, especially with the head and arms. Any grace is from the picture I based the sketch on.

Sam was curled up on some blankets, so I started to do a simple pen-and-paper sketch. He moved after a couple minutes, so it’s only a rough sketch.

Metal nib, green ink. Ink spreads nicely in the paper for this purpose, I think.

Today, I experimented with some calligraphy/drawing ink I have, plus some gum arabic, and the same pens I’ve been using. Note to self: pen over gum arabic doesn’t work well. Still, I think it turned out rather well.

Been busy all day, what with grocery shopping, the girl’s soccer, and gaming with friends. Finally sat down with pen and paper. In this case, a Uniball Signo. And the image I found on Twitter, linked from Tumblr (and because of the way iOS apps don’t always play well with others, I can’t even figure out whose Tumblr it was shared from, as if I click the “visit” link on Pinterest, I get the “please sign in” page for Tumblr, even though I’m signed in on the app; I’ll try to track down the original tomorrow — EDIT: Original is from http://absinthius.tumblr.com/post/38389336640/octopus).

This is based on a picture I took at Animal Ark last year. My proportions are all off, and I really should have done a pencil underdrawing to try to position the spots better. And maybe at some point this month, I’ll figure out how to use the different pen widths.

Seven years ago, Jake Parker came up with the idea of doing an ink drawing every day for a month to improve his inking skills. He liked the results so much he created the annual Inktober challenge.

I’ve eyed the sketches on various social media for a couple years now, and this year I’ve decided to take the plunge and join in. I don’t have fancy brush pens, but I have some Pentel pens of varying colors and Micro-Line pens of different thicknesses to play with, and I found a book at the Easton library on hand lettering — so I’ve got lots of playing to do. I’ll probably try to follow the prompts at least occasionally, but my goal is to have fun for the 31 days.

Anyone else want to give it a try?
