this and that

I am on Twitter now--entirely because of Holly Lisle's birthday giveaway contest. If you're interested, I'm at http://twitter.com/EHartshorn

The Ambition of the Short Story--a nice little essay in the New York Times. Don't remember where I got the pointer.

Following [livejournal.com profile] kalima62's link to the J!nx T-shirt site, I discovered this, which I must buy: Level 1 human. Yes, yes, I know. Human is not a class. It's still adorable!

The sweatshirt everyone taking my workshop on FM should picture me wearing: grammarian sweatshirt

I know there was something else I intended to put into this entry, but can't remember what.

Oh, this wasn't it, but--wow! The artwork in the Boskone 46 flyer is phenomenal!

If it's Friday, these must be links

Been a while since I've done this. However, there were a bunch I wanted to share with [livejournal.com profile] bonniers, and it occurred to me others might also be interested.

a few links for the weekend

I was tempted to do a complete link dump today. On the other hand, my friends in chat barely manage to put up with the number of links I dump at one time. Yes, I've been reading blogs and RSS feeds rather than working on my outline, though I *think* I did get most of Jayson's issues sorted out.

So, not a complete link dump, just a partial one:

strategies to make yourself work

Omni coming back?

"Tibetan" personality test

Boomshine game (ganked from Making Light)

ray guns!

Link dump for the new year

Creative Pro has New Year's resolutions for creative professionals. And in line with resolutions 4 and 5: thank you all.

How about a round-up of word-related links? From the Chicago Tribune. I keep forgetting about Language Hat, so this was a good reminder. My only quibble is that the URLs aren't actual links. :-P

Looking for some future trends? Check out now-defunct Google Answer's insight into business trends.

If you need more for your TBR pile, check out Nancy Pearl's picks (from this past July).

And of course, time wasters. I would be tempted to check out RuneScape, but honestly, I know it would kill my productivity. So I pass it on to you instead. Mean, aren't I?

Monday link dump

Because I'm too lazy to actually work today. ;-)

First of all, Val is looking for recipe testers. Check it out.

Plot bunnies and such for your perusal:

Other cool stuff:
  • Scientific American on the expert mind. Ten years to master something? Interesting ideas. If you have the print edition, it's Full article: Philip E. Ross, "The Expert Mind," Scientific American, August 2006, pp. 69-70.

Oh, and they have these special editions you can buy online. I want this one.

  • From [livejournal.com profile] anghara, a visited-states map.
Mind you, many of these are ones I've just driven through. Looks good, though. I haven't visited enough countries to make the country map worth doing.

  • Via [livejournal.com profile] matociquala, the word count meter.
