Take a good look at my icon up there--the muse with the bunnies. Like it? So did I, when Zette (Lazette Gifford) posted the whole picture as part of March Madness on Forward Motion last year. I asked if she minded if I used it for an icon. Her response said, in part, "Sure, go ahead. I just did them for fun. People ought to enjoy them."

Both that creativity and that generosity are highly characteristic of Zette. In addition to consistently writing more than a million words a year (to which I aspire!) and taking gorgeous photographs (many showcased on her blogs, including one devoted to zoo pictures), she regularly creates images for the monthly challenges on Forward Motion as well as a banner for FM members to use over on the NaNoWriMo forums. For some--such as March Madness, she will provide personalized copies of the image to anyone who completes the challenge.

Her creativity and giving nature came to the fore when she created the Two-Year Novel (2YN) class in an effort to teach others how she goes about creating a novel, from initial idea to edited product ready to send out to agents and editors. I was in the first 2YN class, and I learned a lot. Zette's method may not work for me precisely, but I did learn how to approach some things that would never have occurred to me otherwise. I didn't finish the novel during the 2004-2005 2YN class, but last year, [livejournal.com profile] bonniers asked me if I'd thought about changing the location. Just like that, new life was breathed into the idea--and I'm currently plugging away on Shadowed Sight, knowing that it's all the richer for what Zette taught.

But she does more than write and draw and photograph and teach. As publisher and editor of Vision magazine, Zette puts together half a dozen issues each year, packed with interviews, articles, and reviews, all designed to help out fellow writers. I appreciate this so much, both for the valuable ideas it has given me and for being the first market that ever paid me for my writing. There's something very precious in knowing that someone believes what I have to say is worth paying for, and Zette gave me that gift just as part of what she does every day.

Yes, I appreciate Zette for all that she does. I am constantly in awe of all that she accomplishes--and that she has patience with the thousands of people who use FM. Thank you, Zette, so much. For everything.
