A Room of Her Own Foundation has the application up for the next Gift of Freedom Award. Deadline is October 2008, decision to be made spring of 2009--lots of time to work on your application essays! The award is for $50,000 over a two-year span, and it can be for poetry, playwriting, creative nonfiction, or fiction. For the 2007 award, the foundation received 1,819 applications.

I will be applying again, although I was not a finalist this time around. Money to support my writing--what's not to like? And the process of writing the essays, thinking about what my writing means to me, was very helpful in showing me my priorities. I won't be proposing the same project; I hope to have a first draft of that before the decision is made. I don't know yet what project I will propose, but I have time to think about it.

I'm still waiting for my sex change operation to come through. Well, not really, but it was the only snappy answer I could think of. :) That's a great award, though. It's nice to see such grants for the arts.

In case you missed it, I had an article last year in Vision about grants for writing. Lots of non-sex specific info there. :-)
