Telemarketer calls yesterday. Now, we're on the federal Do Not Call list, so when I see "800 service" on the Caller ID, I figure it's some charity we've donated to in the past or a credit card company -- something of the sort.
My first clue that it's not comes when he asks to talk to the lady of the house. Excuse me? You don't even know who you're calling? When I'm silent, he asks, "Is the lady of the house at home?"
I'm fairly certain he didn't think I was the man of the house. Even with a sore throat and a raspy voice, I don't really hit tenor. I suppose he could've been more insulting. He could've asked to talk to my mother. (That's an easy one to answer: she's not here right now.)
Long, long silence. Finally, I ask him who he is and why he's calling. I don't remember his name; the group he was with is something like DOV, which might be something-or-other Opposed to Violence, which is a good thing, but he didn't tell me what the initials stood for, so I'm just guessing based on a bit of Internet searching.
Nothing sounded familiar to me, so I asked him if he realized we're on the Do Not Call list. Evidently not, as he told me he'd take care of that right away (presumably meaning his organization's don't-call list) and hung up. I'm glad he was so reasonable about it.
I might have had to get bitchy and report the group for violating the Federal law. And really, despite what my brothers may say, I don't do bitchy well.
